CHEER - FOOTBALL - ACADEMICS

One of the things that makes Pop Warner Cheer and Football special is each leagues' focus on academics.  Here with the Amherst Broncos, not only does a participant need to maintain minimum scholastics standards, they are rewarded for outstanding scholastic achievement.

HONOR ROLL

Each season, Amherst Broncos participants who have achieved an average of 90% or higher for the entire previous school year, will be placed on the Amherst Broncos Honor Roll.  Those children will receive an honors certificate at our end of the year banquet and have their name posted on our website to celebrate their outstanding academic achievements.  The Broncos believe that being a good student is the first step to becoming a successful athlete.

Amherst Broncos give it their best on the field and in the classroom.

POP WARNER ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Cheer and Football players who have completed the 4th grade are eligible to become a Pop Warner ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLAR.  In order to apply, students must have a previous years' report card average of 96% or above and demonstrate outstanding academic and community accomplishments.  During the application process, students are asked to fill out an addendum on their non-sports related service, accomplishments and academic honors.  The applications are then submitted for national review where they use a private regression equation of GPA and the addendum to determine that year's ALL AMERICAN SCHOLARS.  The top 20 cheerleaders and the top 20 football players nation wide will be named First Team All American Scholars.  A portion who missed the top 20 will be assigned to the Second Team All American Scholars.  Finally, any participant who has met the requirements for All American consideration will be named as an Honorable Mention

Being named a Pop Warner ALL AMERICAN SCHOLAR is very prestigious.  Qualifying children will receive a congratulatory packet in the mail which includes a certificate of accomplishment and an invitation to the Pop Warner National Awards Banquet.  This banquet alternates each year between Disneyland in Anaheim, CA and Disney World in Orlando, FL.  The 3-day event usually takes place the last weekend in May.   Additionally, a local banquet is held in the Rochester area each June to celebrate our regional winners.

In addition to the honor and celebration, ALL AMERICAN SCHOLARS are eligible to compete for college scholarships once they reach high school.  A participant must have played a minimum of two seasons with a Pop Warner organization and meet the specific requirement for the local or national scholarship for which they apply.  Parents and scholars must remember to revisit the Pop Warner family at that time for a list of specific scholarships available.

The Amherst Broncos produced one Second Team All American Scholar for the 2006-2007 season.  The following article appeared in the Amherst Bee:

Mitch Woite from the Amherst Broncos organization of Pop Warner Little Scholars Football has been selected as a 2006-2007 Second Team All-American Scholar.

According to Pop Warner, the title of All-American applauds Woite's off-the-field accomplishments, as well as his promise for continued academic achievement and excellence. By receiving this honor, Woite academically ranks among the top two percent of the 400,000 Pop Warner participants nationwide. He was the only recipient from the Western New York area.

To celebrate his accomplishment, Woite has been invited to participate in the 47th Pop Warner National Tribute and Awards Banquet to be held in Anaheim, Calif. from May 25 to 26. There will also be a regional celebration held in Rochester this June.

Woite, a sixth grade student at Amherst Middle School, maintains a 99 percent grade point average and was recently named to the 2007 edition of "Who's Who among American Middle School Students". Woite played center and cornerback for the Amherst Broncos last season.
