Frequently Asked Questions
  • Why should I choose football for my child?
Let's face it; there are numerous activities for both you and your child to choose from. We believe football would make an excellent choice. Football is a unique sport in many ways. Really, no other sport involves so many players interacting with one another at one time. Eleven players each line up in numerous offensive and defensive formations. Each player has a specific job and all players are moving with the hike of the ball. Success requires both physical and mental skill, as well as intensive training. Often, it is not the stronger team that prevails, but instead, the smarter and better executing one. By playing football, your child will learn to listen well and develop a multitude of playing skills. Your child will develop strong team building skills as well as sportsmanship.

  • Why Pop Warner Football?
Pop Warner Little Scholars Football and Cheer program is governed by National Rules which stresses proper football and cheer fundamentals as well as scholastics. Our team is associated with Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc. By joining, your child will participate in the Pop Warner All-American Scholarship-Athletic Program. Thus, scholarship opportunities are available along with State or National playoff competition. With Pop Warner Football, your child MUST play a minimum amount of plays during a game. This is monitored by the volunteers from both teams; on both sidelines during all the games. Many professional football players began their career with Pop Warner Football. On our Amherst Association Team, we strive on providing a disciplined, yet fun and rewarding football experience.

  • Isn't football dangerous, with lots of injuries?
All sports can cause injury and your child's safety is of the utmost importance to us. Within youth sports, there is little evidence that football causes more injuries than other sports such as hockey, basketball, and soccer. Many sports injuries actually occur at home or elsewhere, and not during properly supervised play. What is known from youth sport programs is that with proper equipment, coaching, and playing within one's age group, weight range, and skill level, the risk of injury is greatly reduced.

  • What are the details regarding the games?
There are usually seven games during the regular season and some age/weight groups compete in a post-season playoff schedule on the National, Regional and/or State Levels. Regular season games start late August or early September. Regular season games are played on Saturday or Sunday. A few games are played in the Rochester area. All players are weighed just prior to each game. A player found to be outside the weight range will not be allowed to play. Players of acceptable weight WILL play a minimum number of plays as specified by the league Mandatory Play Rules as specified in the National Rule Book.

  • Is cheerleading available?
YES. Our Amherst Association program does have its own cheerleaders. In general, the age ranges are similar to that of the football players. Cheerleaders are also eligible to participate in the Pop Warner All American Scholarship-Athletic Program.
